Amanda Lyne

Chair of the HEA

Amanda has nearly 20 years’ experience in the hydrogen industry, having previously founded fuel cell company ACAL Energy and through her consultancy business Burgundy Gold Ltd, is a specialist in the commercialisation of clean tech. She founded ULEMCo in 2014 to commercialise globally unique UK capability in hydrogen technology to convert commercial vehicles (from LGV to HGV and specialist utility vehicles like refuse trucks, gritter and sweepers) to run on hydrogen, either using the company’s technology for hydrogen dual fuel or applying their know-how and experience to developing zero emission engine vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell integration. She is also currently a Chair of the HEA, and is a member of the Liverpool City Region’s Clean Growth board.

There’s nearly 500,000 heavy duty trucks on the road in the UK; all of them need to be decarbonised by 2050! Battery electric technology is just not practical for most of these vehicles, whereas hydrogen with its fast refuelling and better energy density is by far a better option; this accepted then we need the refuelling infrastructure for hydrogen dual fuel, now, and other h2 technologies as they are available at scale in the next five to seven years. Using a significant proportion of the 10GW of green hydrogen in the H2 strategy to kick-start this transition is a “no-brainer” and if policy could be targeted to create a positive incentive for fleetwide conversion, then we would enable 15-20,000 to get on their road to zero before 2030 and start saving many thousands of tonnes of CO2, now.

Neil Filkin

Deputy Chair of the HEA

Neil is Technical Director at Conrad Energy, and also proud to serve as one of the elected Deputy Chairs of the HEA. Lee Juby

Lee is currently commercial consultant for NanoSUN Ltd. Industry insiders often talk about Hydrogen’s Chicken and Egg problem: Vehicle manufacturers cannot sell hydrogen vehicles without a refuelling infrastructure; Infrastructure & fuel network providers cannot recoup their investment if there are not enough vehicles using hydrogen. The result is Gridlock! Our approach has been to redefine the Chicken and Egg problem as simply “Refuelling Infrastructure is too expensive”. Now that’s an engineering problem we can fix!
Prior to NanoSUN, Lee spent eight years at UK Fuel Cell manufacturer Intelligent Energy, completing his time there as Chief Sales Officer. Leading the global commercial team and launching Intelligent Energy’s low carbon hydrogen products in to three market sectors: automotive, power generation and aviation. Lee’s involvement with the hydrogen industry started back in 1995 when among other projects he supported the field trials of SOFC CHP.
