Emma Guthrie

CEO of the HEA

Dr Emma Guthrie is the new CEO of the Hydrogen Energy Association (HEA), taking over from Celia Greaves, who successfully led the organisation for over 15 years.

With over 110 members, the Hydrogen Energy Association is the voice of UK hydrogen sector, dedicated to supporting stakeholders across the entire value chain. The HEA is a leader in advocating for hydrogen to deliver clean growth, energy resilience and net zero.

Dr Guthrie is a distinguished leader in the hydrogen sector, with extensive experience in advancing hydrogen technologies and infrastructure.

Her career includes 15 years at Air Products where she held a range of positions, including UK Business Development Manager for Hydrogen Energy Systems. In this role she spearheaded the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and infrastructure in cities including London and Copenhagen, through the coordination of multi-stakeholder demonstration projects. Emma also spent nine years at speciality chemical distributor IMCD Group in a variety of commercial roles.

Amanda Lyne

Chair of the HEA

Amanda has nearly 20 years’ experience in the hydrogen industry, having previously founded fuel cell company ACAL Energy and through her consultancy business Burgundy Gold Ltd, is a specialist in the commercialisation of clean tech. She founded ULEMCo in 2014 to commercialise globally unique UK capability in hydrogen technology to convert commercial vehicles (from LGV to HGV and specialist utility vehicles like refuse trucks, gritter and sweepers) to run on hydrogen, either using the company’s technology for hydrogen dual fuel or applying their know-how and experience to developing zero emission engine vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell integration. She is also currently a Chair of the HEA, and is a member of the Liverpool City Region’s Clean Growth board.

There’s nearly 500,000 heavy duty trucks on the road in the UK; all of them need to be decarbonised by 2050! Battery electric technology is just not practical for most of these vehicles, whereas hydrogen with its fast refuelling and better energy density is by far a better option; this accepted then we need the refuelling infrastructure for hydrogen dual fuel, now, and other h2 technologies as they are available at scale in the next five to seven years. Using a significant proportion of the 10GW of green hydrogen in the H2 strategy to kick-start this transition is a “no-brainer” and if policy could be targeted to create a positive incentive for fleetwide conversion, then we would enable 15-20,000 to get on their road to zero before 2030 and start saving many thousands of tonnes of CO2, now.

Olivia Nono

Stakeholder Relations Lead

His particular interest is centred on hydrogen gas storage for fuel systems in vehicles and vessels, latterly he has developed some expertise in bulk gas transportation whilst working with the key players in green hydrogen production in the UK and have acquainted himself with the very different needs of distributing hydrogen as a fuel against hydrogen as a technical gas. His role allows him to travel extensively in Europe and US, bringing this knowledge to the Executive team as well as his UK based experiences. He is passionate about promoting green energy and he is currently benefitting from his long-established personal investment in solar power and electric vehicles. He is an active member of the HEA’s Green Hydrogen working group.

Lee Juby

Lee is currently commercial consultant for NanoSUN Ltd. Industry insiders often talk about Hydrogen’s Chicken and Egg problem: Vehicle manufacturers cannot sell hydrogen vehicles without a refuelling infrastructure; Infrastructure & fuel network providers cannot recoup their investment if there are not enough vehicles using hydrogen. The result is Gridlock! Our approach has been to redefine the Chicken and Egg problem as simply “Refuelling Infrastructure is too expensive”. Now that’s an engineering problem we can fix!
Prior to NanoSUN, Lee spent eight years at UK Fuel Cell manufacturer Intelligent Energy, completing his time there as Chief Sales Officer. Leading the global commercial team and launching Intelligent Energy’s low carbon hydrogen products in to three market sectors: automotive, power generation and aviation. Lee’s involvement with the hydrogen industry started back in 1995 when among other projects he supported the field trials of SOFC CHP.

Frank Ashton

Hydrogen Business and Partnerships Development Manager for Sheffield-based, Chesterfield Special Cylinders (CSC).

Frank facilitates business development, partnerships and innovative projects for CSC which has designed, manufactured and re-certified Type 1 seamless steel cylinders for hydrogen gas storage for more than 80 years of its 125+ year history.  Hydrogen projects include Hydess (DESNZ-funded FEED study of local production, transportation and ultimate use of hydrogen at CSC’s facility) and HySaas, a feasibility assessment of a ‘storage as a service’ business model with Innovate UK funding.

Frank has over 30 years’ experience in strategy, project delivery and business development with the past 4 years being focused on hydrogen storage solutions.  He has a Metallurgy and Materials Science degree from the University of Cambridge, and worked for Cummins Turbo Technologies in Huddersfield and as a consultant for both KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers (Leeds, Manchester and London).
