Spotlight on… ITM Power

ITM Power’s vision is to help the world reach net-zero through the power of zero-carbon hydrogen energy systems that provide energy security and independence from fossil fuels.

For the past twenty years, ITM Power has been designing and manufacturing electrolyser systems that generate green hydrogen based on proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology.

These electrolysers require just renewable energy and water, with oxygen and water vapour the only by-products.

PEM electrolysers enable the storage of excess energy that would typically be sold off to the market at a financial loss—or not harnessed at all—and instead store that energy to sell into a new green hydrogen market.

They can also be used to decarbonise multiple sectors including zero-emission transportation, industrial processes, and the green chemicals sector.

As the first hydrogen related company to be listed on the London Stock Exchange, the team at ITM Power are globally recognised experts in their field.

In recent years, interest in green hydrogen has increased rapidly worldwide – and to help meet demand and accelerate global progress towards net-zero, the company has scaled up at speed.

In 2021, it opened a new Gigafactory in Bessemer Park, Sheffield: the world’s largest electrolyser production factory.

This has enabled ITM Power to cut the cost of electrolysers by almost 40% in the next three years, from increased automation and economics of scale.

They also work strategically with partners – including Linde, Shell, Snam, Hyundai, and Honda, among others – to scale their impact, industrial reach, and market penetration.

Key to its continued growth and success is ITM Power’s equity fundraising efforts.

Building on three successful fundraisers, it raised £250 million in 2021 to expand manufacturing capacity to 5GW per annum by 2024 and increase headcount as it seeks to decarbonise transport and industry.

The company participates actively in industry bodies that champion sustainable power and guide policy, as well as working with schools and universities to help inspire the next generation about green hydrogen.

Lee Juby

Lee is currently CEO of Fuel Cell Systems Ltd (FCSL). Industry insiders often talk about Hydrogen’s Chicken and Egg problem: Vehicle manufacturers cannot sell hydrogen vehicles without a refuelling infrastructure; Infrastructure & fuel network providers cannot recoup their investment if there are not enough vehicles using hydrogen. The result is Gridlock! Our approach has been to redefine the Chicken and Egg problem as simply “Refuelling Infrastructure is too expensive”. Now that’s an engineering problem we can fix!

Prior to FCSL, Lee spent eight years at UK Fuel Cell manufacturer Intelligent Energy, completing his time there as Chief Sales Officer. Leading the global commercial team and launching Intelligent Energy’s low carbon hydrogen products in to three market sectors: automotive, power generation and aviation. Lee’s involvement with the hydrogen industry started back in 1995 when among other projects he supported the field trials of SOFC CHP.
