Centrica is involved in projects across the hydrogen value chain. It aims to be a leading participant in large scale
blue and green hydrogen production projects as well as playing a key role in the trading and supply of hydrogen
and associated commodities such as green gas certificates to support the decarbonisation of its own energy
demand and customer’s demand. We have been at the forefront of developing and shaping the UK’s hydrogen
policy, given our unique presence across the entire value-chain of energy. Consequently, Centrica has worked
closely with government, trade associations and ministers through thought-leadership in advocating strongly
the whole-systems benefits of hydrogen – linking production, storage, transportation and driving cost
competitiveness for end-use customers.
Centrica also has a significant fuel switch demand for hydrogen of its own, from industrial fuel gas requirements
to decentralised energy supply for commercial customers. Across Centrica’s own operating assets (CCGTs, gas
peakers, processing terminals and combined heat and power plants), Centrica’s total fuel-switch demand could
reach c. 550ktpa of low carbon hydrogen.
