Spotlight on… Petrofac

Working in a range of markets across the entire asset life cycle, from design to decommissioning, Petrofac is a leading energy services company that helps its clients meet the world’s evolving energy needs.

They use engineering know-how and consultancy expertise to design, build, and operate world-class energy facilities that are engineered for safety, optimal efficiency, and low emissions. These competencies allow it to offer flexible commercial models, differentiated local delivery, and a technology neutral approach.

Though its heritage lies in oil and gas, it is increasingly applying the same skills, expertise and best practice to a growing suite of energy transition projects across the offshore wind, hydrogen, carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCS) and waste-to-value sectors, supporting the delivery of a more sustainable, cleaner future.

Petrofac’s core service offerings of designing, building and operating complex energy infrastructure are needed just as much in the new energy sector as they are in upstream and refining.

Recent projects include harnessing the power of Western Australia’s natural resources via The Arrowsmith Green Hydrogen Plant that was designed to produce 25 tonnes/day of green hydrogen from bore water using electrolysis and zero-carbon energy sourced from onsite solar and wind.

Petrofac provided front-end engineering design (FEED) for a green hydrogen plant producing a steady supply of high-pressure hydrogen (5tpd @ 370barg) and cryogenic liquid hydrogen (20tpd @ -253°C) utilising fluctuating renewable energy sources.

The project has incurred challenges that are not typical in the design of hydrocarbon gas processing facilities, including the intermittency of renewable energy, the selection of the appropriate hydrogen production technology, feed and wastewater management, large-scale hydrogen storage, equipment supply chain limitations and HSE challenges.

These challenges were addressed through a combination of systems design, unconventional use of equipment and good engineering practices. As Petrofac’s first green hydrogen FEED, this marks an important step on their journey to support new and renewable energy projects.
